Tybee Island Light, Savannah, GA ~ 2005

Tybee Island light station was first established in 1736. The first light was washed away in a storm in 1741. The second light, built in 1742, was also threatened with destruction. A third light, 100' tall was completed in 1773, and was in use until 1867, when the current light was built on the foundation of the bottom sixty feet of the 1773 structure. The fourth light stood 154' tall and was lit by a First Order Fresnel Lens, which can still be seen 18 miles at sea.

Today, that fourth lighthouse still stands, but is now powered by electricity.
