Ram Island Ledge Light, Maine ~ 2004
As we stood on the ramparts of Fort Williams park adjacent to Portland Head Light, we spotted in the foggy distance this lighthouse on Ram Island Ledge. This photo was taken with an Olympus digital 20X zoom.
The lighthouse was built in 1903-04 after a steamship was stranded on a jagged reef submerged at the north side of the entrance to Portland Harbor. The gray granite lighthouse was built upon that ledge, which is submerged two-thirds of the time, hence the apparent docking structure that stands above the water to its left in the picture.
