Portland Breakwater Light, Maine ~ 2004

Just a few hundred feet from the Spring Point Ledge light, this sweet little light, affectionately known as "Bug Light" by the locals, stands at the end of  a 1900 foot breakwater that was built in the 1800's to protect Portland's inner harbor. Subsequent landfill construction made a light at this location unnecessary, as it is now actually less than 100 feet from shore.

This miniature replica of a Greek monument was built in 1875, taken out of service in 1942, and then put back into service as a private light by the city of South Portland and refurbished with the help of the Maine Historical Preservation Committee.

Bug Light is now the significant feature of "Bug Light Park," a public recreational area.
