Old Sodus Light, NY ~ October 2003

In 1870, this current lighthouse replaced the original light, built in 1825. The stone you see stacked as a protective jetty along the shoreline is from the original light. The light itself, however, was decommissioned in 1901, although the keeper's quarters continued to be used by the Coast Guard until the mid 1960s. A beacon light built on a nearby pier took over as sentinel for the entrance to the bay. Today the house and light tower, which contains its original Fresnel lens, are maintained by the Sodus Bay Historical Society, who operate a town museum and give regular tours inside.
