While on a recent birding tour of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Reverve, I decided to check out Playalinda Beach. Not realizing the shuttle was on the launch pad (STS 122 is only a few weeks from launch) I was startled by this helicopter making a pass along the shoreline. I was even more startled by the big guns pointing out the open doors and the soldiers who were manning them! This is a close encounter of the military type. . .

It was probably nothing more than a dignitary getting a tour of the reserve; it is duck hunting season, however. You don't suppose . . .
