Cockspur Island Light, GA.  ~ 2005

This little light was first built in 1848, along with a sister light that is no longer present, to guide ships into the south channel of the Savannah River. The current structure was rebuilt in 1858, and was darkened during the Civil War, as it marked a stronghold (Fort Pulaski) of the Confederate Army. The light was recomissioned in 1868, then decomissioned in 1909 when silt made the south channel no longer navigable by ships. In 2000 a group of citizens refurbished the light into its current condition.
