Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse, Rochester NY ~ 2004

Built in 1822 of  Medina sandstone, the Charlotte-Genesee lighthouse was originally lit by 10 whale oil lamps. In 1853, those lamps were replaced by a 4th order Fresnel lens. This two story brick house replaced the original keeper's cottage in 1863. Because of the shifting sands typical of Lake Ontario, the lens was moved further out into the harbor onto the west pier of the Genesee River in the early 1880's.

Today the light is home to a lighthouse museum and a small Iroquois Indian museum.
