Nubble Light, Cape Neddick, Maine ~ 2004
When we arrived at Cape Neddick, the fog was still dense, as you can see.
"Nubble Light," as it is popularly known, was built in 1879. It is a cast iron building, lined with brick. There is no current keeper living on the island because it has been an automated light since 1987. The current groundskeeper, Mike, told us that as the light is being restored, he may soon have the privilege of living there.
An old cable car hangs out-of-use since the last family was employed to tend the light. According to Mike, the car was used to get children back and forth to the mainland to attend school when the tide was in.
